Overview

Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in western Uganda, is the country’s most visited and diverse national park. Covering approximately 1,978 square kilometers, it encompasses savannah, wetlands, forests, and crater lakes, offering a wide range of habitats for wildlife. The park’s location along the western Rift Valley makes it scenically dramatic, with the Kazinga Channel linking Lake George and Lake Edward as a central feature.

The park is famous for its wildlife diversity, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and Uganda kob. Visitors can enjoy game drives across the open savannahs, where animals can be seen grazing or interacting naturally. The park’s unique ecosystems, such as the Maramagambo Forest, are home to chimpanzees, hippos, and various primates, offering additional opportunities for wildlife exploration.

The Kazinga Channel is a highlight for boat safaris, where visitors can observe large numbers of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and numerous bird species. Over 600 bird species have been recorded, including the African fish eagle, pelicans, and herons. The combination of boat and land safaris provides a comprehensive wildlife experience in one of Uganda’s most scenic settings.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is also known for the dramatic “Tree-Climbing Lions” found in the Ishasha sector. These lions are unique for their habit of resting in fig and acacia trees during the heat of the day. Observing them in this unusual behavior is a highlight for many visitors and adds to the park’s distinctiveness among African safari destinations.

Conservation and community involvement are key aspects of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park’s authorities work with local communities to ensure sustainable tourism and minimize human-wildlife conflict. Visiting the park allows tourists to experience the beauty of Uganda’s landscapes, encounter incredible wildlife, and support ongoing conservation efforts that protect this iconic East African ecosystem.
