Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park, divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, is one of Kenya’s largest and oldest protected areas, covering over 22,000 square kilometers combined. Located in southeastern Kenya, the park is known for its vast wilderness, rugged landscapes, and iconic wildlife. Tsavo’s size and variety of habitats—from savannah plains and volcanic hills to riverine forests and seasonal lakes—make it a haven for wildlife and a popular destination for adventurous safari-goers.

Tsavo East is characterized by wide open plains, sparse vegetation, and the famous “red elephants”, whose skin often appears red after dust bathing in the park’s rich red soil. Tsavo West, in contrast, has more diverse landscapes, including Mount Kilimanjaro views, volcanic hills, springs, and waterfalls. Both regions are home to lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo, making wildlife viewing rewarding year-round.

One of Tsavo’s highlights is the Mzima Springs in Tsavo West, where crystal-clear water bubbles from underground sources, creating a lush oasis in the otherwise dry environment. Crocodiles, hippos, and numerous bird species thrive here, and underwater viewing tanks allow visitors to observe hippos swimming beneath the surface. Tsavo’s diverse landscapes also support unique birdlife, with over 600 species recorded across both parks.

Tsavo National Park is famous for its historical significance. The “Man-Eaters of Tsavo,” two lions that terrorized railway workers in the late 19th century, are part of the park’s lore and can be seen as taxidermy exhibits at the Nairobi National Museum. Visitors today can explore Tsavo through game drives, walking safaris, and guided tours, experiencing both wildlife and the park’s dramatic scenery.

Conservation in Tsavo focuses on protecting large landscapes and migratory routes for elephants and other species. Its vast area provides crucial habitat for species that require space to roam, and the park works closely with local communities to promote sustainable land use and tourism.
