Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwest of Rwanda near the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife destinations. Covering approximately 160 square kilometers, the park is renowned for its volcanic mountains and dense tropical forests. It is most famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas, which attract researchers, conservationists, and tourists from around the world. The park is dominated by a chain of volcanoes, including Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, and Sabyinyo. The park’s biodiversity extends beyond mammals. Birdwatchers can spot over 180 species, including the African green broadbill, mountain yellow warbler, and Rwenzori turaco. The park’s forests and bamboo zones provide critical nesting and feeding grounds for these birds. Hikes in Volcanoes National Park also give visitors the chance to see unique flora, including giant lobelias, heathers, and rare orchids, which thrive in the high-altitude environment.

Volcanoes National Park is also a center for conservation and community engagement. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, based in the park, has worked for decades to protect gorillas and their habitat. Eco-tourism initiatives involve local communities in guiding, accommodation, and cultural experiences, ensuring that conservation efforts also support livelihoods.
