The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its relatively gentle slopes and the comfort of hut accommodation, it is the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers sleeping huts at each overnight stop. This 6-day itinerary allows for proper acclimatization and increases the chances of reaching the summit successfully. The trek takes you through diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to alpine desert, providing stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s peaks and surroundings.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by our team, who will transfer you to a hotel in Moshi for dinner and overnight accommodation. This day is designed for rest after your journey. You will also have a briefing with your guides to discuss the trek ahead and check your gear to ensure you’re prepared for the climb.

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Elevation Gain: 900m
After breakfast, you’ll drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate (1,830m). At the gate, complete registration formalities before starting the trek. On Day 3, the terrain changes as you leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The trail offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This is a great time to acclimatize and adjust to the increasing altitude.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
This is a crucial acclimatization day, where you’ll take a short hike to help your body adjust to the altitude. The goal is to reduce the risk of altitude sickness by allowing your body to adapt. You’ll trek to the Zebra Rocks and back, following a well-defined path in the high-altitude environment. Afterward, return to Horombo Hut for another night to rest and prepare for the ascent to Kibo Hut.

On this day, you’ll leave the moorland and venture into the alpine desert. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and barren, and the air will grow thinner. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you’ll continue across the snow and ice to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking in the magnificent views, descend to Kibo Hut, then continue down to Horombo Hut for rest.
Distance: 18 km (11 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours

On your final day, you’ll descend back to the Marangu Gate, passing through Mandara Hut on the way down. This descent takes around 6-7 hours, and you’ll return to the gate to receive your summit certificate. Afterward, a transfer will take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a celebratory dinner.
After a well-deserved rest, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight back home, concluding your unforgettable journey on Mount Kilimanjaro.
