Your adventure begins at Momella Gate, the entrance to Arusha National Park. After registering and completing park formalities, you’ll start your trek through the expansive savannah, where giraffes, zebras, and buffalo roam. The trail winds through a beautiful montane forest, full of birds and the sight of colobus monkeys. As you ascend, the forest gives way to higher ground, and you’ll reach Miriakamba Hut at 2,500 meters (8,212 feet). Enjoy your first night here, surrounded by lush landscapes and the sounds of the forest.
Distance: 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles)
Elevation Gain: 1,057 meters (3,468 feet)
Time: 2.5 hours
Day 2 involves a steeper climb, transitioning from lush forest to sparser vegetation as you approach the upper reaches of the mountain. The trail takes you across Elephant Ridge, offering panoramic views of the expansive Meru Crater below. The landscape transforms into a more barren, volcanic terrain, making you feel like you’re on another planet. After a challenging but scenic climb, you will arrive at Saddle Hut, located at 3,560 meters (11,680 feet), situated on the mountain’s shoulder. Rest here, prepare for the summit push, and take in the dramatic volcanic surroundings.
Distance: 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) round trip
Elevation Gain: 1,006 meters (3,300 feet)
Time: 7-12 hours
This is the most challenging day of the trek, as you’ll start your summit attempt pre-dawn. After a hot drink, you’ll begin your ascent at around 1:30 am. The trail is steep and covered in loose scree, leading to Rhino Point (3,800 meters / 12,467 feet) and then Cobra Point (4,350 meters / 14,271 feet). The final stretch to the summit (4,566 meters / 14,980 feet) involves scrambling over a rocky ridge. As the sun begins to rise, you’ll be treated to an unforgettable panorama of the Meru Crater, the ash cone, and distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After enjoying the views, begin your descent back to Saddle Hut, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Elevation Loss: 906 meters (2,972 feet)
Time: 3-4 hours
On your final day, descend through the lush lower slopes of Mount Meru. The scenery changes once again, with the forest becoming denser and teeming with life. As you return to Momella Gate, the end of your trek, you’ll be greeted by your transport and transferred back to Moshi, where you can celebrate your incredible achievement.
