The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is renowned for its stunning scenery and diverse landscapes, making it one of the most scenic trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day trek allows for gradual acclimatization and includes more challenging terrain compared to the Marangu Route. The trek takes you through rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, all while providing stunning views of the mountain’s distinct peaks. By taking this route, trekkers have a better chance of reaching the summit due to the longer acclimatization period.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by your team and transferred to a hotel in Moshi. This day is reserved for rest and relaxation after your flight. You’ll also meet your guides, who will brief you on the upcoming trek, conduct a gear check, and ensure you’re ready for the adventure ahead.
Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Elevation Gain: 1,200m
After breakfast, you’ll drive to Machame Gate (1,800m), where the trek begins. The first day’s hike takes you through dense rainforest, where you may encounter various wildlife and lush vegetation. The path can be muddy and slippery, but the journey is incredibly scenic. After around 5-6 hours of hiking, you will reach Machame Camp (3,000m) for your overnight stay.
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
On Day 3, you’ll begin the trek to Shira Camp (3,850m). The trail ascends into the moorland zone, offering breathtaking views of the mountain. As you hike, the terrain becomes more rocky, and the vegetation becomes sparser. The hike is relatively short but steep, so it’s a great opportunity to acclimatize. Once at Shira Camp, enjoy the stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro as the sun sets.
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Moorland and Alpine Desert
On Day 4, you’ll trek to Barranco Camp (3,950m), but with a critical stop at Lava Tower (4,630m), the highest point of the day. The Lava Tower gives you a great chance to adjust to the altitude before descending back down to Barranco Camp. This tactic of hiking high and sleeping low aids in the acclimatization process. The scenery along the way is extraordinary, with sweeping views of the Barranco Valley.
Distance: 5 km (3 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This day is short but challenging, with a steep climb up the Barranco Wall, a famous section of the Machame Route. The climb is a bit technical but manageable, with the help of your experienced guides. Once on top of the wall, the trail becomes easier as you descend into the Karanga Valley and head to Karanga Camp (4,035m). Here, you’ll rest and enjoy the views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.
Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
On Day 6, you’ll make your way to Barafu Camp (4,600m), which serves as the base camp before your summit attempt. The trek is shorter but steep, and as you approach Barafu, you’ll start to feel the effects of the altitude. Once at camp, take the opportunity to rest and hydrate before the final push to the summit. You will have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the ascent in the middle of the night.
Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles) up / 13 km (8 miles) down
Hiking Time: 7-9 hours up / 5-6 hours down
Habitat: Arctic
Summit day is the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek. You will begin your ascent around midnight, hiking up the Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim. From there, you will continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The climb is strenuous and requires determination, but the view from the summit is worth every step. After spending a short time at the summit, you will descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m), where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest and overnight stay.
Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
On your final day, you will descend from Mweka Camp to the Mweka Gate (1,640m). This descent takes around 3-4 hours and takes you through dense rainforest, offering a different perspective of the mountain’s ecosystems. Once at the gate, you will receive your summit certificate. You will then be transferred to your hotel in Moshi for a celebratory dinner.
