The Machame Route is one of the most popular trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its scenic beauty and diverse ecosystems. This 6-day itinerary allows climbers to experience the stunning landscapes, from the lush rainforest to the semi-desert zones, and the spectacular views at higher altitudes. The trek includes a steady acclimatization process, ensuring you’re well-prepared for the summit push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our team will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi for check-in, dinner, and breakfast the next morning. Later, we’ll gather for a briefing and equipment check to ensure you’re ready for the climb.

Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, we’ll depart Moshi and head to Machame Gate to begin our trek. Following registration formalities, we’ll hike through lush rainforest terrain, stopping for lunch along the way. We’ll reach Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.
Distance: 5km / 3.5 miles
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation Gain: 830m
Habitat: Moorland
This day, we leave the rainforest behind and enter the Shira Plateau, a volcanic landscape with expansive views. After a short rest with lunch, we’ll continue our trek up to Shira Camp, where we’ll stay overnight, surrounded by the vast, semi-desert moorland.

Distance: 10km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation Gain: 120m (with significant ups and downs)
Habitat: Semi-desert
We’ll begin by hiking past the iconic Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation. After lunch, we’ll descend into the Barranco Valley and set up camp near the Great Barranco Wall. This day offers a challenging but rewarding hike, with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s landscape
Distance: 10km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation Gain: 680m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day starts with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through the Karanga Valley. After lunch, we’ll continue towards Barafu Camp, where we’ll rest and prepare for the summit push, which begins later that evening.
Distance: 13km / 8 miles (up), 12km / 7 miles (down)
Hiking Time: 7-12 hours up, 5-6 hours down
Elevation Gain: 1,255m, then descend 2,565m
Habitat: Arctic
We’ll start our summit attempt in the early hours of the morning, climbing towards Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your success at the summit, we’ll descend back down to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp, where we’ll spend the night.
Distance: 10km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Elevation Loss: 1,450m
After breakfast, we’ll begin our descent through the rainforest, enjoying the final leg of the journey. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates and be transferred back to Moshi to relax and reflect on your incredible achievement.
After a restful day in Moshi, we’ll transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home or onward travels.
