Overview: Your adventure begins as you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After settling in, you’ll have a briefing with your guides, who will go over the details of the trek and inspect your gear. If you arrive earlier in the day, take the opportunity to explore Moshi, a charming town that blends African and Asian influences, offering a colorful market and relaxing coffee spots. Overnight in Moshi.

After breakfast, you’ll meet your trekking crew and be driven to the Umbwe Gate, where you’ll register and make final preparations for the climb. The trek begins through the lush rainforest, where you’ll trek along muddy trails surrounded by rubber and giant fig trees. The route steepens as you make your way through the Umbwe and Lonzo rivers. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo, the summit, as you reach Umbwe Cave Camp, a peaceful spot nestled among giant trees and thick undergrowth. After a hearty dinner, relax and rest for the night.

Today, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the drier, crisp air of the moorlands. The route becomes more challenging as you ascend through cloud forest and rocky outcrops along the Umbwe Ridge. The spectacular views continue as you approach Barranco Camp, located in the valley beneath the Western Breach and the Great Barranco Wall. Tonight, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and watch the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors.

Distance: 6 km
The day begins with the exciting challenge of scaling the Great Barranco Wall, a 257-meter vertical rock face. Though challenging, this section is more of a scramble than a climb. Once you’ve conquered the wall, you’ll traverse a varied landscape, descending through scree and ridges towards the Karanga Valley. This alpine desert landscape offers dramatic views of the Decken, Heim, and Kersten Glaciers. After a satisfying dinner, rest at Karanga Camp.

Distance: 3.5 km
Today’s trek takes you through the high alpine desert landscape as you climb steadily from Karanga Camp. As you approach Barafu Camp, the environment becomes increasingly harsh and exposed, but the views are worth it. From Barafu Camp, you’ll have panoramic views of the Southern ice fields of Kibo and the surrounding landscape. The real challenge lies ahead as you prepare for your summit attempt. Rest as much as you can before the midnight push to Uhuru Peak.

Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters
Walking Time: 14-16 hours
Distance: 19 km
Summit day has arrived! After an early start at 11 pm, you’ll begin the final ascent, trekking through the night on steep scree slopes. As the dawn breaks, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the sun rising over the horizon, casting golden hues across the ice fields. After reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak, take in the incredible views and celebrate your achievement. The descent begins immediately after, as you make your way back down to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved breakfast. Continue your descent to Mweka Camp for a peaceful rest in the misty cloud forest.
Elevation Loss: 1,600 meters
Walking Time: 3-4 hours
Distance: 10 km
The descent continues today, taking you through lush vegetation and the misty cloud forest. The route is gentler than the ascent but can be slippery, so watch your step. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate as a memento of your incredible achievement. Afterward, our vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned rest.
