The 8-day Lemosho Route is designed to offer trekkers a more gradual and enjoyable ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro, with better acclimatization and stunning views. This route provides a fantastic opportunity to experience diverse landscapes ranging from rainforests to alpine deserts, while increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. This is your chance to relax and recover from your flight. The guide will brief you about your trek, ensuring that your mountain gear is checked and prepared for the journey ahead.

Time: 2-3 hours
Habitat: Rainforest Zone
After breakfast, you will be driven to Lemosho Gate, where you’ll begin the registration process. From here, the climb begins into the lush rainforest. This relatively short trek will take you to Mti Mkubwa Big Tree Camp, where you’ll spend your first night surrounded by the sounds of the forest.

Time: 6-7 hours
Habitat: Heather and Moorland Zone
Today’s trek takes you through the moorland zone, where you’ll pass volcanic rock formations and scattered heather. The route offers beautiful panoramic views, including glimpses of the Kibo Peak. After a steady climb, you’ll arrive at Shira One Camp, where you’ll be able to enjoy views of the plateau and prepare for higher elevations.

Habitat: Heather and Moorland Zone
On Day 4, you’ll continue your journey across the Shira Plateau, a stunning landscape that gives you great views of Kibo. The altitude here will start to have a noticeable effect, so you’ll want to take it slow. At Shira Two Camp, you’ll be able to enjoy the view of the Northern Icefields and the majestic Kibo Peak.

Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert Zone
This is a significant day in terms of altitude. You will first trek to Lava Tower, a stunning volcanic formation at 4,550m (14,927ft). This is a great place for a break and lunch. Afterward, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, situated at the base of the Great Barranco Valley. The descent will help with acclimatization as you prepare for the challenging days ahead.

Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert Zone
The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rock climb that can be physically demanding. Once you’ve conquered the wall, you’ll head down into the Karanga Valley. The journey is shorter today, allowing for more rest and preparation for the next stage of your journey.
Distance: 4 km (2 miles)
Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert Zone
Today’s trek is short but steep, taking you up to Barafu Camp. This is where you’ll rest and prepare for your summit attempt. After arriving and having lunch, you will rest during the afternoon and enjoy an early dinner. You will need to sleep for a few hours before your midnight departure for the summit.
Distance: 13 km (8 miles) up / 15 km (9 miles) down
Time: 11-14 hours
Habitat: Summit Zone
Today is the ultimate challenge. You’ll begin your summit attempt at midnight, hiking in the dark and cold toward Stella Point, where the summit rim can be seen. From Stella Point, you’ll continue for another 1-2 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for breakfast and then continue down to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest Zone
Your descent continues today as you make your way through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement with your team. Afterward, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure. If you have extra time, you can choose to explore Moshi or even book a safari extension before your return flight.
